As a tall, broad-shouldered teenager, John Goodman attended Affton High School in St. Louis, where he dedicated himself to playing football (the team won one game.) John next entered nearby Meramec Community College, then transferred to Southwest Missouri State University, where he graduated in 1975 with a B.F.A. degree in theater. On August 15,1975, with a thousand dollars given to him by his brother, Les, John climbed aboard an Amtrak train and headed for the bright lights of New York.

The struggling young actor performed in numerous dinner theater and children's theater productions, and in several off-Broadway plays. Things started to come together when he joined a road production of "The Robber Bridegroom" for nine months. Eventually, he starred in two Broadway shows, "Loose Ends" in 1979, and "Big River" in 1985. John was cast as Dan Conner, Roseanne's loving, blue-collar husband in "Roseanne" which debuted on ABC in 1988 and ran for nine years.

John made his screen debut in the cable production "Mystery of the Moro Castle." His television credits include guest starring roles in "Face of Rage," "Heart of Steel" and "Moonlighting;" and on "Chiefs," "The Paper Chase," "Murder Ordained" and "The Equalizer." Among his feature film credits are roles in "Eddie Macon's Run," "C.H.U.D," "The Revenge of the Nerds," "Maria's Lovers," "Sweet Dreams," "Raising Arizona," "True Stories," "The Big Easy," "Burglar," "The Wrong Guys," "Everybody's All-American," "Punchline," "Sea of Love," "Stella," "Always," "Arachnophobia," "Barton Fink," "King Ralph," "The Babe," "Matinee," "Born Yesterday," "The Flintstones," "Hudsucker Proxy," "Pie in the Sky," "Mother Night," "Fallen," "Combat," "The Borrowers," "Big Lebowski" and "Blues Brothers 2000." He also starred in "A Streetcar Named Desire" on television. John produced and starred in "Kingfish: A Story of Huey Long" for cable television, and he returned to the theater, playing Falstaff in "King Henry IV, Parts I and II," at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, California.

During the run of "Roseanne," John received many awards and nominations including in 1990, a Golden Globe and an Emmy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, and in 1991, an Emmy Award nomination. John received a People's Choice Award nomination in 1992 as well as an Emmy nomination for Best Actor, and Viewers For Quality Television honored him with an award for Best Actor. In 1993, John won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, an American Comedy Award for Best Actor, and received nominations for the Emmy Award and Viewer For Quality Television Award for Best Actor. In 1994 and 1995 he received nominations for Best Actor for an Emmy, a Golden Globe and an American Comedy Award. He received another American Comedy Award nomination in 1995 for Funniest Male in a Comedy Series. That same year he was honored with nominations by The Screen Actors Guild and Viewers For Quality Television for Best Actor in a Comedy Series.
