It
was only a matter of time before the WIZARD OF OZ came to TBS. Learn Why >>
Her optimism inspired us. Her voice broke our hearts. And her
demure girl-next-door appeal made her the irresistible star of the WIZARD OF OZ.
Judy Garland was born Frances Ethel Gumm on June 10, 1922,
in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, the youngest of three daughters. Her father was
a movie theater operator who moved the family out to California in 1927. From
the age of three she was a Vaudeville performer. At age nine, she changed her
name to Judy Garland at the suggestion of performer George Jessel. Her beautiful
singing voice earned her a contract with MGM in 1936. At seventeen she became
immortal after her starring role as Dorothy in The WIZARD OF OZ, for which she
received a special Academy Award for Best Juvenile Performance. The vivacious
and multi-talented Garland appeared in thirty-two feature films in her career,
earning Oscar® nominations as Best Actress for "A Star is Born (1955),"
and as Best Supporting Actress in "Judgement at Nuremberg (1961)."She appeared
in thirty television specials and had her own television variety program, The
"Judy Garland Show (1963-64)." She was a familiar face on television and stage
throughout her career, selling out numerous shows and winning a Tony award and
five Grammy® awards including album of the year in 1961. She was married
five times. Tragically, Garland died of a drug overdose in 1969.
Today, Judy Garland remains one of the most beloved actresses
in the history of film. Her fan base is almost cult-like in their adoration
of Garland. Her musical legacy lives on through her two daughters, Lorna Luft
and Liza Minnelli.
