It
was only a matter of time before the WIZARD OF OZ came to TBS. Learn Why >>
Lyman Frank Baum was born in 1856 in Chittenango, New York.
In the 1870s he became an actor while working for his family's oil business. He
published his first book, Father Goose: His Book in 1899, while he was
working in Chicago on a trade magazine. The book sold well, but it would be his
next tome that would make him a world-renown success.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz hit store shelves in
1900. He adapted it for the musical stage in 1901. Baum settled in Pasadena,
California and wrote 13 more books in the Oz series. Baum was fond of using
pen names such as Schuyler Staunton, Laura Bancroft, Captain Hugh Fitzgerald,
Suzanne Metcalfe, Floyd Akens, and Edith Van Dyne. Baum died in 1919.
