The set was built above a gravel pit to allow for the multi-leveled effects.
Rather than tear apart the city of New Orleans, a replica of the French Quarter was built in a gravel pit outside of Toronto. This location allowed the crew to use their skills to build a collapsible street, creating the illusion of a sinkhole devouring Mardi Gras.

Although the characters in the film seem to be in a life-size pressure cooker, temperatures on the set were actually freezing. The Toronto location meant sub-zero weather and unique challenges for the cast and crew.
